Haiku By Hatsune

When I think of a type of food that’s delicious, healthy and visually appealing, sushi is the first thing that comes to mind. This weekend we got our sushi fix at Haiku on Taikon Lu..rumoured to be the best sushi restaurant in town.

After reading on line of the popularity of the restaurant we were sure to make a reservation prior to arrival T Luckily we did, as the restaurant was filled to capacity with a wait at the door. Upon arrival, we were impressed with the ambience and décor of the restaurant. Split level, classy, with dim lighting and dark wood tables with the kitchen overlooking the dining room.

Our Order:

Edamame: We started our meal off with a generous portion of edamame. Lightly salted, perfectly cooked…though nothing out of the ordinary.

Tai Carpaccio:  The Tai Carpaccio was a varation of sashimi. It was red snapper with green onions drizzled with soy sauce and vinegar. The presentation was fairly nice but the taste of the vinegar overpowered the mild flavor of the snapper.

Tuna Sashimi: There were only six pieces of Tuna sashimi on the plate. However, the portion was deceivingly filling. The tuna was good quality with a fresh meaty flavor, unfortunately though,  it was disappointingly slightly frozen.

Rainbow Roll: The rainbow roll, a staple in most Japanese restaurants, was one of the best I’ve tried. It was rolled with tuna, salmon, white fish and avocado and was filled with crabsticks, cucumber and avocado. A fresh and tasty roll.

Butterfly Roll: To switch it up a little, I ordered the butterfly roll with sweet sauce, shrimp tempura and soft shell crab annddd yummm! It was soo good! I am normally not a huge fan of sushi containing mayonnaise, but the mayo mixed with the soft shell crab added a nice creamy texture which contrasted will with crunchiness of the shrimp tempura. A light drizzle of teriyaki sauce on top was the perfect binding ingredient of the roll. A must order if you visit Haiku.

Dessert: I asked for a dessert menu only to discover there is none, and the sole dessert of choice is icecream. Yeah okay, I like icecream, but come on one choice? A little boring if you ask me.

The verdict? Although a little on the expensive side, Haiku is a good quality sushi restaurant with nice ambience and décor. Great one for a date night.
